Schizophrenia and Other Psychotic Disorder Treatment

Schizophrenia is a chronic disorder of the brain that has a prevalence of 1%. Despite the fact that we live in this century, there is no cure for this disease. When it is active, symptoms include hallucinations, delusions, paranoid ideation, ideas of reference (psychotic symptoms); inability to initiate plans, speak or express emotions, lack of motivation, irrational behavior, and catatonia. Cognitive symptoms such as memory problems, difficulty with attention, disordered speech, and decision making are also very common.

Extensive research has proven a genetic predisposition and hereditary basis for schizophrenia. However, there is abundance of evidence that supports multiple causes which contribute to its manifestation and complexity.

Treatment helps reduce the frequency and intensity of the symptoms. Antipsychotics are medications that target such symptoms. They can also reduce relapses. In order to improve the quality of life, various psychosocial treatments can help people lead more rewarding lives. Modern research holds promise for novel and more effective therapies.
